Dandruff
Most people think dandruff is just dry, flaking skin. This is only partly true. Animals who stay in dry, heated rooms will have drier, scalier skin, but dandruff (especially excessive) is the result of irritating metabolic wastes and toxins that are being eliminated through the skin. The toxins accumulate in sebum (skin oil) and dandruff. Dandruff is dead skin cells that are being replaced by new cells (this process is called skin turnover, and it’s normal unless it accelerates, leading to dandruff formation). Sebum is the oily excretion from the skin that contains metabolic wastes.

From a detoxification perspective, your goal is to help the skin rid the body of metabolic wastes. This process is slowed when the animal is eating or assimilating food. Therefore, animals prone to dandruff and skin irritations should only be fed regular meals—no in-between feedings, snacks or free-choice feeding.

Add organic Flaxseed oil and Fish oil to the food. These two oils are high in the beneficial omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. Avoid plain vegetable oil it is essentially devoid in beneficial fatty acids and often is highly cooked and processed.

Lecithin helps keep the elimination process active and effective. It works by dissolving the sebum and oils in the skin pores so they’ll be less likely to accumulate and clog pores. As a bonus, cleaned skin pores will allow new hair to grow, so the coat will become lusher. Add lecithin capsules or granules directly to the food.
