| Ear Infections (Otitis) |
The ear may be filled with brown or black waxlike material. A more severe inflammation or infection may emit a brown or pink pus or even blood from the ear. Then you can use a variety of home remedies to keep the ears clean and healthy and prevent recurrences. When working at home, never put a cotton swab—or anything smaller than your elbow—in your animal’s ear. Also, don’t pull out any hair, even if it looks matted or loose. If the ear requires medical attention, your veterinarian will remove the hair.
Ears can be cleaned with slightly warmed olive oil (no warmer than your own body temperature—otherwise, you could accidentally burn the ear canal). Add up to 10 drops of oil to the affected ear, gently massage the ear canal alongside the face, and then let your animal shake out the dissolved wax and oil (stand clear!). Then add vitamin E oil from a capsule—a 200 iu size is fine—and massage it into the ear canal to further promote healing. If your animal companion suffers from chronic ear infections, consider adding Lactobacillus acidophilus (probiotics or “friendly flora”) to the diet, either in capsule form or from plain, low-fat, live-culture yogurt.
Once you’ve initiated cleansing from the inside out, you can maintain the ear with a natural brand of ear wash. Halo Herbal Ear Wash comes in liquid form. Simply place the drops in the ear weekly with gentle massage. Look for this product in a specialty pet shop or health food store. |
