Home Healer: Hot Spots

Hot spots, surface level skin infections on dogs or cats, can spread quickly and be quite painful. The result of a skin irritation that causes your pet to scratch and bite until infected, hot spots are best healed when caught early. Keep an eye on your pet if he or she is licking, scratching, or biting at the same area frequently. If you notice a hot spot, which will look red and swollen with scaly skin, call your veterinarian for an appointment and try the following home remedies to alleviate your pet’s discomfort.

Apply Fresh Aloe Vera: Using a steak knife, cut the leaf of the aloe plant and apply the gel directly on the irritation. Store the aloe in the refrigerator and apply cool for additional comfort. After applying the aloe, ensure that your pet does not ingest it, as this can cause digestive upset and lead to vomiting and diarrhea.

Try Baking Soda: Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with a little bit of warm water to make a paste. Gently apply to the spot for fast-acting itch relief.

Treat with Tea: Tannins in black and green tea serve as antiseptics for the skin. Prepare the tea as usual. Allow the tea bag to cool, then place it on the hot spot.

Use All-Natural Remedies: Veterinarian’s Best Hot Spot Spray for dogs or Dr. Goodpet’s Scratch-Free for Dogs and Cats are both great all-natural choices for quickly alleviating the itchiness and pain of hot spots.

Heal Hot Spots at the Source: Common causes of hot spots are irritations from flea or tick bites and the insecticides and pesticides found in many flea and tick products. See your veterinarian for treatment of the underlying cause of the hot spot and protect your pet from flea and tick bites without harsh chemicals. Consider using Earth Animal’s Nature’s Protection Daily Herbal Drops. Administered orally every day, these drops will help make fleas and ticks averse to your pet’s blood thus preventing most bites and help calm skin irritations from any bites that do occur.
